MACHINAL

Written: Sophie Treadwell

Submitted for a competition, the brief required the space to be ‘uncomfortably, sickly sweet’, and covered in pastel tones, especially pink. The story follows a woman trapped in her roles: as a daughter, a workplace secretary, a wife, a mother. She only finds freedom when she kills her husband, but is immediately faced with the legal implications of her actions- so she is never truly free.

I wanted to play with the idea of the soft pink room being an isolation room in an insane asylum. Women tend to be granted the insanity plea a lot more often, so I thought it would be a way to combine the softness that the brief requested with a real-life consequence to her actions. Glimpses of it can be seen throughout the show, but it is only revealed in the final scene, when the main character is imprisoned.
